Oct. 14, 1960 - The Thunderbird in 1961 enters the third stage in its evolution. The first was the 1955 Thunderbird, a two-passenger personal car; the second was in 1958 when it became a four-passenger car. The 1961 Thunderbird features elegant new styling but retains the classic concept of Thunderbird design - the distinctive roofline, four-passenger luxury, the famous console and rich interiors. Although the 1961 Thunderbird is one-half inch shorter than the 1960 model, its greenhouse is ten inches longer, resulting in a more spacious interior. An optional steering column and wheel move ten inches to the side to make it easier for the driver to get in and out. Standard equipment includes Cruise-O-Matic transmission, power steering, power brakes, and the new Thunderbird 390 four-barrel V-8 engine. With the 1961 Thunderbird comes a written warranty that has been extended to 12, 000 miles or one full year
