Aug. 08, 1965 - Fords Close Factory For 11 Days: Fords are closing their factory at Halewood, near Liverpool, this morning, sending 8, 000 men home for 11 days. The Fords close-down was agreed yesterday with the works committee at the40 million Halewood plant as a substitute for short-time working throughout September. Production had to stop because a strike by 300 delivery drivers - employed by Silcook and Colling - has left all parking space at the factory choked with 8, 000 new cars worth about5 million - half of them for export. Production is due to restart on September 7. Then the factory will work a normal five-day week. But a Fords spokesman said: The four-day week may well start after September. And the factory will stay closed if the delivery drivers are not back at work. It will take three days to move enough cars for production to begin. The man are striking because a shop steward was dismissed after being convicted of dangerous driving.
