May 05, 1969 - ROLLS WRECKED IN SAFETY TEST. Three Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow saloon cars, each worth £7, 959 were crashed head-on into a huge concrete block in tests to meet United States safety regulations, at the Motor Industry Research Establishment near Nuneaton. The cars were crashed in tests on the deformation of the passenger compartment and rearward movement of the steering column in a head-on impact. The company said that their cars now meet all known safety requirements throughout the world, including those likely to be adopted in Britain in the foreseeable future. Changes have been made on the facia panel involving more than 1, 200 new parts. Energy-absorbing material is now fitted round the windscreen, facia, lower facia, centre console, doers and the back of the front seats. Matches and grab handles are recessed, turn indicators have been enlarged and side marker lights changed.
