Mar. 03, 1968 - NSU R. 80 receives top British award - voted car of the Year by Panel of International Judges.: At a reception in London's Royal Garden Hotel today, NSU, the West German car manufacturers, received the CAR of the Year award for their revolutionary Ro 80 saloon. The award, a specially designed trophy, was presented to Dr. Stieler von Heydekampf, Chairman of the Board of Management of NSU Motorenwerke A.G. by Marcus Morris, Managing Director of the National Magazine Company, publishers of CAR magazine which sponsors the award each year. It is the first time that the award has gone outside Britain and only three of the panel of seventeen expert judges voted otherwise than for the winning R. 80 with its rotary combustion engine and trend-setting design. Sixty-eight cars were nominated for the 1968 award and to ensure a truly international vote, the panel of judges was drawn from eight different countries.
