Mar. 03, 1972 - Prototype electric bus enters service in Leeds: The first of two battery electric buses ordered by the Department of Trade and Industry is to be delivered today to Leeds City Transport, the first of a number of users. After route-proving trials, it will enter passenger service later this month. The bus is designed to carry 26 passengers and will be used initially to supplement the existing mini-bus service which passes through the pedestrian area of the city. Later it will be used to link the car parking facilities in Woodhouse Lane with the shopping centre. Fully laden, the vehicle has a range of approximately 35 miles per battery charge in city center traffic, rising to 70 miles when driven non-stop. Top speed on level ground is about 25 miles per hour which should be adequate for most city center conditions. The buses were designed and built by Crompton Leyland Electricars Ltd. of Tradegar, Mon. jointly owned by Hawker Siddeley Group and British Leyland Motor Corporation. Photo shows Interior of the electric bus showing seats at rear and luggage racks on left and right. The new bus can travel up to 70 miles non-stop on one battery charge or 35 miles in normal service carrying 26 passengers, nine seated
