1971 - Launching of the New Readycall Car Telephone Service by Christopher Chataway. Mr. Christopher Chataway Minister of Post and Telecommunications, today inaugurated the new Readycall radiotelephone service launched by Burndept Electronics Ltd. It Is the first in the United Kingdom to provide an efficient confidential radio secretarial link at the touch of a button, along with a you have been page indicator telling drivers who leave their car that a message awaits them. The service, which operates on the UHF band instead of the open VHF channels, ensures complete two way privacy of speech between the user and the trained Readycall secretaries in the control center at Erith.
