Jul 20, 1944; GERMANY; CARL FRIEDRICH GOERDELER, former Mayor of Leipzig. Carl Friedrich Goerdeler, who until 1936 was chief mayor of Leipzig, and who out of opposition against National Socialism, resigned as commissioner of the Reich for price control in 1937 and became one of the leaders of the opposition against Hitler. After the Stauffenberg assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20th 1944, he was taken into custody, and on Jan. 2nd, 1945 he was executed in Berlin - Plotzensee. The idea had been for him to take over a democratic government after the assassination
