He was born in Innsbruck/Austria as the son of the actor Heinz Schroth and stepbrother of the actress Hannelore Schroth and was a regular ensemble member of the Hamburg Thalia Theatre as early as 1932. Up to the early Sixties he remained in close contact with this stage with only some short interruptions. In Hamburg he acted in numerous plays together with his first wife Karin Jacobsen and also as a director. Carl-Heinz Schroth has become one of the best known German character actors and also played many roles in films and on television. For some years he has been a guest-star at various German stages, among them at the Renaissance Theatre in Berlin
