Carol Hayes, singer, injured in William Tell performance
Aug. 08, 1956 - The Professor's cutlass act closes down: Singer Carol Hayes, 25, was cut on the head during a sword-and-apple William Tell act because she moved said the man who held the sword, Professor Jimmy White, yesterday. Carol was injured after she agreed to let the Professor cleave the apple in two while she balanced it on her head. She stepped forward when Jimmy White could not get any volunteers from the audience during Ramsgate's sports week fete at Ellington Park on Thursday. White swung the sword over his head, then brought the blade smartly down. As the apple split in two, watchers were horrified to see that Carol's head was injured with a two-inch cut.
