Carpet of foam for wheels-up emergency landing, Waddington
Aug. 08, 1960 - Carpeting A Runway With Foam To Aid Aircraft Making A Wheels Up Emergency Landing: A revolutionary system for carpeting a runway with foam to aid aircraft making a wheels-up landing due to technical failure has been perfected at the RAF V-Bomber station at Waddington, Lincs. The apparatus, devised by General Engineering Flight at Waddington, is a 3-foot long 12, 000 gallon tank mounted on a 50-ton crash recovery trailer. In 17 minutes it can coat a runway with a thick layer of foam for a distance of 1000 yards.
