Apr. 18 Carthusian monastery in Italy illuminated for first time in its six century history: The Carthusian Monastery of Pavia has been illuminated for the first time in its 600 year history with carefully placed lamps individually highlighting the elaborate carvings which make the structure one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in existence. Shown is the facade of the chapterhouse. To provide the versatile and subtle illumination necessary for a light and sound presentation depicting the history of the monastery, General Telephone and Electronics International Incorporated supplied Sylvania Caribbean fixtures with 250 watt lamps. Supplemental lighting is provided by 1, 500 watt Sylvania tungsten halogen and 1, 000 watt Sylvania incandescent lamps. The richly carved surface, numerous statues, niches, windows, and other recesses made lightning the monastery extremely difficult, said Carlo Mo, the sculptor who is in charge of the light and sound presentation. We could never have achieved the detailed lighting of the chapterhouse that we desired merely by illuminating the building with floodlights
