Jun. 06, 1955 - Soviet Russia Sets Up a New North Pole Research Station Built On An Ice Floe.: A new ice-floe research station North Pole - 5 was set up in the Eastern Part of the Arctic days a whole township sprang up amidst high snow-covered hammocks on a large ice for many years old. Everything necessary for life and research - tents - dwellings - ware flown from the mainland. The area around North Pole 5 Station is one of the leas explored in the Central Arctic and therefore its study of great value to science. The first group of Polo researchers landed on the ice floor as it passed the point 80 dag. Northern Latitude and 156 dog. 13 Eastern latitude. Now the floe carrying the station is drifting northward having Zig-zagged about 200 kilometers.
