Feb. 29 Tuning in muscle power. Dr. Don Chaffin of the University of Michigan and Edward Moulis, Western Electric Co. engineer, monitor electomyographic (EMG) signals from manufacturing employee Marty Garry as she works in the background, The signals are produced by her muscle fibers. There is no physical connection between the electrodes on her arm and the EMG equipment in the foreground at the Kansas City Works. Instead, the signals are sent by a tiny radio transmitter on her shoulder. EMG's are being studied by Western Electric engineers with the aim of improving the way employees make products for the Bell System and increasing their personal comfort
