Mar. 31 Mabel The Postwoman Has Walked More Than Ten Times Round The World For 35 Years Oliver Has Delivered The Letters Without A Day Of Sickness: Miss Mabel Oliver, skim and silver-haired, rented her feet. The fest that have carried her a distance of more than 10 times the circumference of the earth, and claimed she had never had a day off for illness since becoming the postwoman of the Sussex village of Punnett's Town 35 years ago. Before that, this remarkable woman was a singer and dancer. After an attack of jaundice, she was advised to live an open-air life. and that is what she has been living ever since without ever feeling ill. At Christmastime, the villagers and formers in her area give Mabel ao many presents she had to borrow a van to collect them all. Mabel's round is a truly rural one. Although she leaves the post office on her cycle, she leaves it at a conveniently central point and continues on foot, knowing every short cut over the farmland. Stiles, even over barbed wire fences, are taken in Mabel's steady strid. Only occasionally does she pause for a rest, usually sitting on a milk church left in the lane. On her journey she meets and greets everyone even the cows and dogs all know her. Come rain, come shine, Mabel gets to the outlying homes and the mail is delivered. Only luxury Mabel enjoys on her return is a cup of tea and a good soak of her precious strong feety in a bowl of salted water. Mabel Oliver, postwoman of Punnett's Town, a village near Heathfield, sets off on one of her rounds, which often stretch to twelve miles. She's never had a day's illness since she started this open-air life
