May 05, 1963 - The Europe Bridge crossing the Wipptal (Wipp Valley) over the Sill River in Tyrol is part of the New Austrian super-highway across the Alps. This super-highway leads from the German border at Kufstein to the Brenner Pass (Italian border) which is the only all year around open north-south passage across the Alps. The 2, 296 foot bridge rises close to 600 feet above the valley floor and is Europe's highest steel bridge. One of the piers supporting the 649 ft central span is 492 ft high, the other 459 ft. The bridge is a six span steel box girder with orthotropic plate deck. Its roadway has three lanes in one direction and two in the other. The extra lane is for heavily loaded trucks moving up a 4% grade. It is hoped that the Europe Bridge will be practicable this fall, though foundation troubles and financing problems have delayed its completion the absolute deadline for which is February 1964 when Austria will play host to the Winter Olympics at nearby Innsbruck.
