Oct. 24, 1964 - Last of Yorks donated to air scouts.: An historic era in World War 11 aviations came to an end at Lashem Airfield, Hants, today, when the last of the famous Avro Works was retired from Dan-Air Services Airline and donated to the Boy Scouts. The York, once a veteran of R.A.F. Air Transport Command, flew many wartime missions since its construction in 1942. In recent years the York figured prominently in the Berlin Airlift and later flew planeloads of refugees from Hungary to the West. One of its many unusual cargoes included a silver throne delivered to Emperor Haile Selassie in Ethiopia. The York's presentation was made by Mr. L.E. Moore, a Director of Dan-Airs Services Ltd. Accepting on behalf of the Air Scouts branch of the Boys Scouts Assoc. was Air Vice Marshal Chacksfield. The aircraft will be permanently stationed at the new Lasham Scout Air Training Centre and will be used for a bunkhouse. Computations that the 200 m.p.h. plane has logged over 2, 300, 000 miles.
