Chandelier ready for auction, Denham Film Studios
Dec. 00, 1936 - Many a couple have danced beneath this beautiful chandelier in ballroom sequences from the many lavish historical romances filmed at Denham. Now it hangs forlornly. The Death Of Denham Film Studios: On Feb. 24th the last chapter in the story of Denham Film Studios will be written when their final contents will be sold by auction. It was in 1936 that Sir Alexander Korda opened the studios which were the largest in Britain, the first to be built on Hollywood lines and at a cost of 1, 000, 000. Denham was to mark an era that aimed at making British films of international importance and drew to the studios world famous stars and directors. Famous films made there included The Chest Goes West'. Rembrandt'. The Four Feathers, Catherine the Great, Caesar and Cleopatra, and The Shape of Things To Come'. At one time the studio had 15 features on the floor. The last complete film made at the studio was Walt Disney's Robin Hood in 1951. Since then it has been gradually dying, only being used for a few bits and pieces, and for music recordings
