Charlie Chaplin at Savoy Hotel, London, with foot in plaster

Oct. 10, 1966 - Charlie Chaplin Breaks An Ankle. Charlie Chaplin broke his left ankle in a fall yesterday while working on his film A Countess from Hong Kong. Mr. Chaplin, 77, tripped while walking across rough ground at Pinewood Studios. His foot was put in plaster at a nearby hospital and a Rolls Royce took him to his suite at the Savoy Hotel. Doctors told Mr. Chaplin he must rest, but he said: I will be back at the studio on Thursday. I can easily work from a chair. Mr. Chaplin, sitting in a wheelchair with his foot supported by a cushion, said It does not hurt, but I shall have to wear the plaster for six weeks. Mr Chaplin arrived in London from Switzerland last week with his wife, Oona to put the finishing touches to the 2 million film. Stars of the film are Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando.
