Chartwell Manor, Kent, Churchill home, open to the public

A view of Chartwell Manor taken from the Terrace. The original part of the house dates back to the 16th century, but has been enlarged and added to a lot since then. Chartwell Manor grounds open to the public: the many extra visitors now in London for the Coronation celebrations had an opportunity of seeing over the grounds of Chartwell Manor, Sir Winston Churchill's home in Kent, when the grounds were opened for charity. Chartwell stands against a country hillside, its eastern windows looking out over the great Weald of Kent to the South Downs. The original house is believed to have been begun in the reign of Edward III. Part of the present house dates from the 16th century and Henry VIII is reputed to have stayed there when he journeyed from London to see Anne Boleyn at nearby Hever Castle. Chartwell was bought by Sir Winston in 1922. It stands in 82 acres of garden, woodland and fields. Here is to be found the lake on which are the Premier's famous Australian black swans. There are also well stocked fish ponds
