Chess set in precious metals, Collingwoods the Jewellers

Feb. 29 Where Two Precious Armies Meet For Seventy-Thousand-Pounds: The setting, Collingwoods the Jewellers, London. Amongst all the highly polished silverware and Jewellery stand two armies. Not real armies, but two sides with some of the most expensive chess figures in the world. Priced at 70, 000 Collingwood say it is the most expensive chess set that they have handled. The Masterpiece was conceived by Malcolm Appleby who was commissioned by Collingwood to do the work. Starting in 1970, Malcolm has just this month finished the work after seven years. The work was completed in an old disused railway station up in Scotland, which could not be more extreme from the plush surroundings of Collingwood's. Malcolm has spent the last seven years with complete dedication, as each chess piece was forged, moulded, engraved and carved out of the most expensive materials possible. The white pieces are made of solid silver, hand carved, with Ivory inlays set into pre-shaped areas. The design of the black pieces was carved into black tempered steel and finally beaten with a 24 carat gold sheet over the surface. The chess set will be on display at the 64th Annual Chess Championships in Brighton from 8 to 20 August 1977
