Chetham's Hospital School to become School of Music

Mar. 03, 1969 - Chetham's Hospital School To Be Reorganised As a Junior School Of Music For Boys and Girls; At a press conference and reception held at New Zealand House, Haymarket, London, today, it was announced that Chetham's Hospital School, Manchester, is to be reorganised as a Junior School of Music. It is at present a recognised Independent Day and Boarding Grammar School, with its own Junior Department for boys between 7-11 years. The normal roll is approximately 230 Seniors and 70 Juniors; there is accommodation for about 70 boarders, With the provisional approval of the Minister of Education, and the enthusiastic encouragement of many eminent musicians, the Governors have arranged to reorganise Chetham's as an Independent non-denominational Junior School of Music for up to 350 day and boarding boys and girls of unusual musical talent. This reorganisation is taking place now and in September this year the venture will begin. The speakers at today's conference were Yehudi Menuhin, Sir Robert Mayer and David Willcocks.
