Chevening House, Kent, for Chancellor of the Exchequer

May 05, 1973 - Chevening house for Chancellor of Exchequer; Mr. Barber, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has been chosen by the Prime Minister as the first resident of Chevening House, Kent, which was left to the nation by Lord Stanhope. Under the terms of the Chevening Estate Act, the Prime Minister may at any time revoke the nomination and make a new one. It is not intended that the choice of resident minister should be permanently linked with the post of Chancellor. In view of a hope expressed by the late Lord Stanhope that the Prince of Wales might become the resident, the Prime Minister consulted the Queen and the Prince, who made it clear that in view of his commitments he dd not wish to be considered.
