Feb. 25 People Of The Pampa, Living In The Peaks Of Peru Have Been Unchanged For 400 Years: High amidst the snow-capped Andean peaks of Peru live the Merochucans, directs decedents of the Conquistadors. They have been out of touch with civilization for nearly 400 years, have retained their Spanish Customs and traditions but only speak Quechua, the language of the Incas. In village many of them in excess of 16, 000 feet, scattered across the pampa, the Morochucans still live in isolated splendour raising heards of cattle and sheep while enjoying a communal form of government. Over the centuries they have succeeded in breeding a small type of horse, many of them even smaller than Shetland ponies, and the only animal that can gallop in the rarefied air at these high altitudes. Ocassionally they meet on the Great Pampa especially to attend a wedding ceremony which offers a good excuse for week of festivities. An Indian girl of the Peruvian Pampa
