Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu

Mar. 31 Eastern Nigeria's Military Governor - A Portrait: Lieutenant - Colonel Odumfgmu Ojuku (born 1933) received his early schooling at Lazoa. In 1944 he went to Epsom College, Surrey and from there proceeded to Lincoln College, Oxford where he read Modern History. He returned to his native country in 1955 and joined the Eastern Nigerian Public Service as an administrative officer. In 1957 Odumegwu Ojukwu joined the Nigerian Army and after a brief training period at the Army Depot at Zaris he went to England to undergo an officer's training course at Eaton Hall, Chester (1957-58). On his return to Nigeria he joined the Royal last African Frontier Force Training School in Teshia Ghana where he taught officer cadets tactics and military law. In 1961 he was promoted to Major and posted to Kaduns Brigade HQ as Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster-General, then he was sent to the Congo during the Congo Emergency and served in Lullusburg in Kessi Province from where he was selected to attend the Joint Services Staff College in England in 1962. Promotion to Lt -Col in January 1963, then followed the appointment to command the 5th Battalion in Kano in 1964. Photo shows: East Nigeria's military governor, Lt-Col.
