Cinerama theatre goes mobile

1964 - Cinerama Goes Mobile. Largely British in conception, the first mobile Cinerama theatre is being built at a cost of 00, 000. It is 128 ft in diameter, seats 1, 216 people, and is built of plastic treated canvas which is entirely fireproof. The screen is 103ft wide by 37 ft high, and is the largest in the British Isles. To resist the, most adverse weather conditions, 25 tons of steel girders are used in the construction of the theatre which has upholstered seats, central heating, modern toilets and washrooms with hot and cold water which will give a standard of comfort comparable with conventional theatre. After an initial run in London at the Richmond Athletic ground the theatre will be touring the South of England for a series of short seasons. The entire equipment is packed on to 42 lorries, trailers and caravans, which if on the road at the same time, keeping correct convoy distances, would stretch for 2 miles.
