Circular section of nuclear submarine, Barrow-in-Furness
Jun. 06, 1959 - Duke of Edinburgh lays keel of Britain's first atomic submarine H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh performed the ceremony of laying the keel of Britain first Atomic Submarine the 2, 000 ton super 30 knot craft The Dreadnought. The Duke performed the ceremony by switching on a gamma ray housed in a protective leaden box which in turn starts the winch which draws the first 30 ft. circular section of the submarine on to the slipway. The Dreadnought will be a super craft of 2, 000 tons capable of seeking out enemy craft at more than 30 knots.
