Circular section of nuclear submarine, Barrow-in-Furness
Jun. 06, 1959 - Duke of Edinburgh lays keel of Britain's first atomic submarine. H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh performed the ceremony of laying the keel of Britain's first atomic submarine - the 2, 000 ton super 30 knot craft - the dreadnought. The Duke performed the ceremony by switching on a gamma ray housed in protective leaden box-which in turn starts the winch which drew the first 30ft. circular section of the submarine on t the first slipway. The Dread enough will be a super craft of 2000 tone -0 capable of seeking out enemy craft at more than 30 Knots.
