Circular section of nuclear submarine, Barrow-in-Furness
Jun. 06, 1959 - Duke Of Edinburgh Lays Keel Of Britain's Firs Atomic Submarine: H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh performed the ceremony of laying the keel of Britain's first Atomic Submarine-the 2, 000 ton super 30 knot craft-the Dreadnought. The Duke performed the ceremony by switching on a gamma ray housed in a prrotective leaden box-which in turn starts the winch which draws the first 30ft. circular section of the submarine on to the slipway. The Dreadnought will be a super craft of 2, 000 tons-capable of seeking out enemy craft at more the 30 knots. Photo shows.
