Clara Quien works on portrait bust of President Nyerere

Aug. 08, 1966 - British-born Sculptor completes bust of President Nyerere: The well-known British born sculptor, Mrs. Clara Quien (she was born in Bromley, Kent) has just completed a slightly larger than life-size bust of President Nyerere of Tanzania. The bust is being taken to Italy where several replicas will be made in bronze. Mrs. Quien completed the bust in seven sittings, each lasting an hour with President Nyerere, at State House, Dar es Salaam. The bronze bust will be sold and the money used for charitable purposes. Now in her fifties, Mrs. Quien started modelling in China at the age of two. She has also sculpted India's Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, and his daughter, Indira (now Prime Minister), Lord Mountbatten and many others including the Shah of Persia. Photo shows President Nyerere at the last sitting at the State House, Dar es Salaam, whilst Mrs. Clara Quien gives the final touches to the plaster cast which she has completed
