CND peace rally en route to Hyde Park, London

Oct. 10, 1981 - Thousands In London CND Rally: One of the largest demonstrations ever seen in London took place on Saturday 24th October when tens of thousands of CND members and supporters marched from Victoria Embankment to Hyde Park to protest against the nuclear arms race. Organisers estimated that the crowd gathered in the park for the rally was around 250, 000 although the police estimate was lower. Leading disarmament campaigners including E.P. Thompson, Tony Benn, Michael Foot and Lord Fenner Brockway addressed the enormous crowd in Hyde Park. The London demonstration was one of a number of similar events organised throughout Europe to mark the worldwide disarmament week.
