1957 - World's Biggest Radio Telescope Nears Completion.. To Be Used For Exploring The Skies. Work on the world's biggest radio telescope - at Jordell Bank, Cheshire - nears completion. The project is costing about £650, 000 is the responsibility financed by the Department of Scientific Research and the Nuffield Foundation. Work on the telescope - which is one of the most fantastic instruments in the world - began in 1952 - and consists of a gigantic copper mesh bowl weighing 30 tons supported by two 180 ft. towers.
