Feb. 02, 1959 - Tests Ready For Anti-Cancer Drug - Britain's Modest Professor Flies To U.S.: A 47-year-old professor flew from England to New York last night with formulae in his pocket which may lead to a revolutionary new method of attacking cancer. New Drug compounds which he and his fellow workers have evolved in five years of intensive research and trial are to be tested out on human beings fro the first time. The tests will take place simultaneously in America and Britain and follow experiments on thousands of animals in England. These have shown an 80 p.c. rate of success on one type of tumour. The man who worked out the basic theory for the new drug is Professor James Danielli, of Kings College, London, an unassuming, modest man who stresses that the potential triumph he may have in his hands is only one in a long series of battles to be fought. Up to 1, 000 rats a year have been used in trials in this country, They have been implanted with tumours and treated with the drugs. the graphs showed that 80 p.p. were, and there were no recurrence. Professor Danielli is working in conjuction with the foundation, Ltd. and he expects to spend two months in America.
