Unlike their grandparents, parents and even older brothers and sisters who had to learn the Three R's the hard way, today's school - children are being taught by all sorts of new fangled fun methods. They had the new alphabet to help with reading, and how many school are introducing the computer to help with sums. After a three year survey on the use of small45 computers in 115 English school, the conclusion is that children learn arithmetic more quickly and more thoroughly with mechanical aid. It might be thought that that they would learn less about how mathematics work, but in atc, they learn less about how mathematics work, but in act, they learn more because they can see exactly what the machines are doing throughout the working out of a problem. One of the pioneers of the use of computers in school is Mr. Peter French, head of the Farnham Castle Primary School. He is delighted with the results of the experiment among the boys in his school.
