1963 - Panama Canal Zone: Known during construction days as Culberta Cut, Gaillard Cut is approximately 8 miles long and cut out of solid rock most of the way named for Coloney David Duboise Gaillard, the engineer in charge of this phase of canal construction, the cut was the principal excavation site and often the scene of heartbreaking slides which slowed its completion.
