Jun. 06, 1973 - Comet aircraft crash lands safely in foam bed: A Comet 3B jet being driven at 60 mph into a plastic foam bed 300 feet long and two feet deep at the Royal Aircraft Establishment's headquarters at Thurleigh, near Bedford, yesterday during tests on the foam, which is designed to prevent aircraft from overshooting runways without braking. The aircraft came to a halt in 250 feet. Photo shows the Comet 3B jet coming to a halt in the bed of foam during the demonstration at Thurleigh yesterday
