Commander Humphrey Gilbert with historic pipe
1961 - No Pipe Dream: Commander Humphrey Gilbert, nearest surviving descendant of Sir Walter Raleigh, holds in London a pipe believed to have belonged to his ancestor who is reputed to have introduced smoking into the court of Queen Elizabeth I. The occasion was the 400th anniversary celebration by the English Briar Pipe Trade Association of the introduction of tobacco in to the Europe, an event that founded a tobacco-growing industry in the United States and a pipe-manufacturing industry in Britain
