Jul. 07, 1954 - Australian Communist Journalist Attends Royal Commission On Espionage In Melbourne: One of the witnesses called to give evidence at the Royal Commission on Espionage-which is held at the High Court of Australia-in Melbourne-following the granting of political sayium to Vladimir Petrov and his wife-former Soviet representatives in Australia-was Mr. Rupert lockwood-an Australian Communist Journalist. One of the documents referred to by Mr. Justice Owen-Prresident of the Court was Document J'-and the fact that it contained names of many well known people in Australia-it would not be fully published-and only extracts referred to. The document is said to have been written by Rupert Lockwood at the Soviet Embassy in Canberra-and if it had been written outside the Embassy-there would have been strong grounds for various actions for defamation against the author arising out of various passages.Photo shows.
