1972 - Windmills can provide cheap electricity.: Even in this super-technical age, there seems to be a place for the good old-fashioned windmill - as a source of electricity. Todays energy sources cannot provide enough for the growing population, and the sources of natural energy are being rapidly depleted. A group of research workers in Geneva (under Prof. Marcel Jufer), has pointed out not only the need to understand this danger, but also that a new attitude to other possible solutions is needed. They have built a new type of windmill on the island of Sylt (West Germany) with steel vanes. The tower is 12m high, the diameter of the vanes is 11m, the width of each vane 5m, and it weighs altogether 12 tons. It is capable of providing five houses with electricity (incl. heating).
