Jun. 26, 1957 - Largest Radio Telescope In the World for scientific Research in to the Atmosphere:The largest Radio Telescope in the world was shown to the press yesterday for the first time. Built at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire for Manchester University at a coast of about ?650, 000 - it consists of a giggntic copper mesh bowl weighing 750 tons suspended between two 180ft towers. Funds for its construction were provided by the Department of the bowl is 250 ft. and the serial masts 821/2 ft high. The total weight of its moving parts is 2, 000 tons.
