Jun. 26, 1957 - Largest Radio Telescope In the World for scientific Research in to the Atmosphere:The largest Radio Telescope in the world was shown to the press yesterday for the first time. Built at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire for Manchester University at a coast of about ?650, 000 - it consists of a giggntic copper mesh bowl weighing 750 tons suspended between two 180ft towers. Funds for its construction were provided by the Department of the bowl is 250 ft. and the serial masts 821/2 ft high. The total weight of its moving parts is 2, 000 tons. It is to be used by scientists for the investigation of the arrival of meteors in to the earth's atmosphere - the behavior of the aurora bornalis etc. Photo Shows The giant bogies that track the telescope around on its axis
