May 05, 1959 - Microwave measurements calibrated: A radar specialist at the Western Primary Standards Laboratory at Convair (Pomona) Division of General Dynamics Corporation at Pomona, Calif, uses a primary precision attenuator to check performance of a secondary standard attenuator mounted in the microwave network mounted on the worktable behind him. After is has been thoroughly checked and calibrated, the secondary standard instrument will be returned to a West Coast contractor, who will use it to check performance of radar systems supplied to the US Navy. The WPSL's principal function is to assure uniformity of measurement standards throughout the aircraft, missile and space industries for programs directed by all military service and civilian agencies under the Department of Defense. In this test, precision attenuators in the X-band microwave region are calibrated in terms of the National Bureau of Standards certified piston attenuator (foreground). A 30 megacycle I-F substitution system is used. It incorporates a microwave receiver and certified standard attenuator (foreground). Keystron oscillators in oil baths to minimize ambient temperature variations (square tank, left center) automatic frequency controls and records (recorder, left center), and micro ammeters with light beam indicators to eliminate parallax (far right). In the background is an auxiliary signal source for tuning the system to optimum match, and in the far rear, a similar system is used for measurements in the C-band frequency spectrum
