Feb. 26 Giant ear trumpet for outer space.: This large ear trumpet is one of the world's most sensitive sound receivers. Built to capture sounds from outer space the 50-ft-long revolving antenna is located at the U.S. Bell Telephone System's space research laboratory at Holmdel (New Jersey). The box at the end of the trumpet houses a ruby maser amplifier refrigerated to 456 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. The receiver figures prominently in the Echo and Telstar satellite projects. Its futured use is said to be of immense importance in tracking and recording distant atmospheric transmission from the surrounding universe.
