Mar. 22 Research on roads and traffic: An automatic counting machine used by the road research laboratory: This instrument developed at Harmondsworth, works in conjunction with a rubber tube across the road where the traffic flow and density is measured, it counts the vehicle and prints the totals every 15 minutes. Started in 1933 as a small experimental station on the Colnbrook by-pass by the ministry of transport, today its scope is much broader and concerns road materials, methods of making roads, layout, traffic and safety. Physicists, chemists, mathematicians combine with the practical engineers to discover ways of improving the laying, the maintaining and economic upkeep of the country's roads. Work is firstly done in the labs, using a variety of machines. Findings are then tested in practice on the lab's own test roads, and finally a full scale trail is arranged with a local authority. Cost of making a road job an experiment is small compared with the possible savings effected.
