Feb. 26 Blowtorch proves no match, for Apollo II insulation; Cape Kennedy, Florida Model Grace Laird keeps her cool as Dr. Larry Blair of the Johns-Manville Research and Engineering center melts a coin she holds on a mitt made of a unique space age insulation used to back up the reentry heat shield of the Apollo II command module. Grace's hand is protected from the searing flame of the propane torch by a quarter inch thickness of the insulation, called Micro-Quartz. This thermal insulation is one of several J-M insulation used in various components for the lunar missions, including the command and service modules, the lunar module, Saturn V launch vehicle, and the mobile launcher
