Mar. 22 Space Research tool now used to make Razor Blades.: Palo Alto, Calif. May 28 by duplicating the vacuum of space 115 miles up, scientist at Varian Associates here have developed a new method of plating any solid surface with any metal, allay or nonmetallic substance such as glass or plastics. The revolutionary process is so precise and economical it now is used to plate razor blade edges with pure chromium for improved durability. The new blades, called Krona-Chrome and now being introduced nationality by the Schick safety razor Co. are made with the new vacuum plating system. Varian foresees wide industrial uses for the which combines high vacuum, radio frequency electric energy and ion bombardment (which produces eerie plasma glow in photo) to slam atoms of plating material on to surfaces with 1, 000 times the force of prior plating techniques. Process can even coat fabrics with metals or put stainless steel on ordinary plastics
