Mar. 22 Replica of telegraph instrument used by Samuel F.B. Morse toe send the first public telegram, What hath God Wrought! from Washington to Baltimore on May 24, 1844. The telegraph key may be seen in the center of the photo. The original instrument is now owned by Cornell University which was named after Ezra Cornell, a Morse partner who built the first 40 mile telegraph line between Washington and Baltimore
