Mar. 22 World's Largest Private Wire System: Autodin, the world's largest automatic digital data network, was designed and built by Western Union for the U.S. Department of Defense. The switching center shown above, at Hancock Air Base near Syracuse, is one of the system's nine computer facilities in the country. Autodin can serve up to 2, 700 stations and handles more than 250 million messages annually. The highly sophisticated network was engineered for the high-speed transmission of data by magnetic tape, punched cards, automatic sending and receiving machines, and other data devices
