Apr. 17 Total Energy saving exit signs for schools, institutional use: This new exit sign is self powered and is the nation's first Beta particle energized emergency exit directional signal. It uses no electrical energy, no batteries, requires no wiring or conduit, and can be installed in minutes with only screws and a screwdriver, as is demonstrated here in a community college installation. Developed by American Atomics Corporation, a Tucson based engineering and nuclear energy research firm, the sign uses tritium gas permanently encapsulated in glass tubes, the insides of which have been coated with phosphor. Safe, low energy Beta rays from the gas striking the phospor, cause the tube to glow giving off a continuously burning green light visible in the dark from 250 feet. The signs are guaranteed for a full decade, cost 44, and save 85.20 in power, bulbs and labor cost over its 10 year life
