1968 - Underground cable - chilled by liquefield gases to temperature several hundred degrees Fahrenheit below zero - may help solve the problem of transmitting large blocks power into the cores of the nation's expanding cities. At the temperatures of these cryogenic (very cold) fluids, ultra pure metal conductors lose much of their resistance to the flow of an electric current. Under a, 050, 000 project sponsored by the Edison Electric Institute and the Tennessee Valley Authority, the General Electric Research and Development Center will explore the technical and economic feasibility of cryogenic underground cable. One possible configuration - shown here in model form is demonstrated by Stephen H. Minnich, manager of the Center's Cryogenics Unit. The three-year project is part of an overall program planned and approved by the Electric Research Council, which is composed of representatives from the various segments of the electric power industry
