Jun. 06, 1968 - The English Electric Computer which was used to provide Atlantic Yacht Race winner with his course: Photo shows the English Electric computer in Hartree House, Queensway, London, which was used to provide Geoffrey Williams, the Briton, who was declared winner of the single-handed trans-Atlantic yacht race, with the recommended best courses to follow. The courses were calculated daily from three items of information (1) The position of the yacht Sir Thomas Lipton (2) the speed characteristics of the boat in different wind speeds and directions; and (3) a detailed weather forecast obtained from the Meteorological Office on magnetic tape. Williams said yesterday; it worked perfectly, far beyond my wildest dreams
