Feb. 02, 1971 - A new and greatly simplified process for fabricating complex electronic display panels from thousands of the world's smallest lamps, each no larger than a grain of salt, has been announced by scientists from the General Electric Research and Development Center. The process permits thousands of the dots of light - called light-emitting diodes - to be controlled with a minimum of interconnections and external wires. To form a single letter, number, or symbol in a display panel, 35 of the diodes are combined in a rectangular array five rows across by seven rows down. Left: a typical array is shown on a piece of newspaper print. Right: by activating the diodes in various combinations, they can be lighted up to make visible the 64 standard computer characters. This development is expected to speed application of flat solid-state display panels in computers, data handling terminals, and eventually even information-retrieval units for the home
